Just found this sight whilst looking for the correct definition before i have the phrase tattooed under a hibiscus flower. I understand that most people will look at the tattoo and think "Hello! On her ankle?? Eh??" but in the books that I've read and the documentaries that I've seen about the islands (that I hope to one day visit when I win the lotto) I believe that Aloha means to love, respect, understand and appreciate, not just each other (hence its said when greeting and bidding farewell), but everything around you. Its a word that generate's good vibes just by saying it or thinking it! I hope that by carrying it close to me it will always generate these vibes and if I can send Aloha to one person that see's my tattoo then I will pleased! I've loved reading everyone's interpretation of the phrase and will bear these in mind whilst in the chair.
Aloha

Aloha is the essence of the human spirit. It is the unspoken word of the soul that the islands bring forth from the very depths of the human being. The emotion of heart to heart love in each greeting. Aloha is you and I connecting hearts in each breath we take.

This past weekend, I heard a speaker say she was once told the true meaning of Aloha means "I wish for you to continually stand in the breath of God". I like that.

"Aloha" The Hawaiian People have the Secret
A - L - O - H - A!
As Danny Couch Sings "This is Aloha" in his famous song "These Islands" the emotion he adds is only part of the song.
A stands for Akahai, kindness, to be expressed with tenderness. Meaning welcome, what I have you may share with me.
L stands for Lokahi unity, to be expressed with harmony. Hawaiian words 'loko maikai', which means, what I've said comes from my heart and with good intentions.
O stands for Olu’olu, truthful honesty, to be expressed with pleasantness. Hawaiian word 'oluolu', meaning happy. This is part of their heritage... of happy people happily doing for others.
H stands for Ha’aha’a, humility, to be expressed with modesty. Hawaiian word 'ha`aha'a', meaning humility and meekness. We welcome you, we do things for you because we enjoy doing it, and we are very humble to serve.
A stands for ahonui, patient perseverance. Hawaiian words 'a-a ka maka', which means, our eyes are wide open but our lips are sealed. If you have taken all from us, who is to say, for we knew what they were doing.
These insights describe a way of behaving or way of life sometimes called "The Aloha Spirit" or "The Way of Aloha". It’s an elementary code of ethics taught to the very young.
Be honest, truthful, patient, kind to all life forms, and humble."
“Aloha” reflects traits of character that express the charm, warmth and sincerity of Hawaii's people "Aloha" is more than just a word of greeting or farewell. "Aloha" holds deep meaning along with the many words in the English dictionary for the Hawaiian word equal, shows mutual regard and affection extending warmth in caring with no obligation in return. "Aloha" reflects the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other. "Aloha" means to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen and to know the unknowable.
"Aloha Spirit" is the bringing together of mind and heart within each other. It brings each person to The self. Each person must think and emit good feelings to others.
Aloha is a feeling, a sense.. That one word that can emit tears of joy, smiles galore, as well as sorrow.
So, we've seen that Aloha is indeed a way of life, an attitude. Live Aloha in the choices you make every moment.
So, the next time you greet a friend with "Aloha," hold its meanings close to your heart and think of the whole picture. It is indeed a beautiful word. It is the way the people in the Hawaiian islands live their daily lives and intermingle with one another, the feeling that makes you never want to leave or makes you long to return. We need more of that feeling.
It reminds us to consider the other person and try to put ourselves in their place and understand from their perspective.
"Breaking" this law carries no obvious penalty such as a fine or being put in jail. Forgetting it does have consequences, the least of which is that things just won't work as well as they do when we remember it! It is similar to the Golden Rule, though not exactly the same in usage.
The true Ambassador of Aloha, sings it, lives it, practices it and teaches it.

In Kaua'i it's the way people treat each other, a way of life and a state of mind. Aloha can not been seen like you can see a rainbow, but when you see it, you'll KNOW IT!

Aloha is not specific to Hawaii. While the actual word may have been conceived in the islands, what that word represnts is a universal state of being which can be considered common to all men and women. It is a mindset that hinges upon acceptence, caring and love for one's self, others and the more general world around them. Again, while the word itself is specific to Hawaii, what it truly embodies is applicable to everybody.

I can't explain aloha, but I know what aloha feels like. I visited the beautiful island of Kaua'i in March 2004. I felt like I was home. I will return as soon as I can. I will someday come home to Kaua'i

| ALOHA means the sharing of unconditional love for and between Creator and Creation. The more you give to be shared, the more sharing you are given. We share ALOHA with each other, and that honors the Giver of Aloha because we have accepted the gift of Aloha and shared it with everything -- earth, sky, water, wind, universe -- and every living person and thing. |
